THE MANDRAKES In Genesis 30:14-24 we learn that Jacob's favorite wife, Rachel, cannot have children, while her sister, Leah, also married to Jacob, has had many children. Leah’s son, Reuben, has brought her some mandrakes, with roots which were thought to have aphrodisiac properties. Rachel exchanges with Leah the right to sleep with Jacob for a night to have access to these aphrodisiacal plants. It is interesting to note that Rachel, the favored wife, apparently controls who her husband will sleep with.
