“Then Judas went away & hanged himself.” Matthew 27:5
Nowhere in the Bible does it mention that Judas hung himself from a tree, but it has become part of the legend of this betrayer that he died in this fashion. I learned from Moldenke's Plants of the Bible that this species with clustered flowers directly on the branches symbolizes Christ’s tears and the bright pink flower color indicates that the tree burned with shame, when Judas hung was on it.
