THE BURNING BUSH II “The angel of the lord appeared to Moses in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked & the bush was blazing, yet not consumed.” Exodus 3:2 There are various opinions about whether this is a supernatural event being described or related to a specific plant, with many feeling that the miraculous & not the natural is the best explanation. In 1996 when I visited St. Catherine’s monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai, I was shown a rubus sanguineus & told that it was the burning bush plant Moses would have seen. I learned on returning home that this plant was not native to the Sinai environment. I chose to picture in this quilt the dictimus albus, a plant native to the Sinai, but added an element of the supernatural by making the blooms look like tongues of fire.
