Piecing the Peaces

In making a quilt by hand the straight stitch, called by quilters piecing, is used to sew the many pieces of fabric together to make a quilt. I use straight stitch embroidery with black thread on muslin to picture Palestinian, Israeli, and American peacebuilders doing simple acts like demonstrating and children dancing. None of these individual actions by themself bring about peace, but with many others contribute to piecing the peaces.

Peacebuilders are people who want to see a just resolution to this conflict. Peacebuilding involves a great variety of activities including bearing witness to the effects of what is happening on the ground, supporting people in nonviolent ways to confront injustices & educating the public about what they have learned.

My work related to Israel/Palestine has included participating with the Peace Cafe from 2003-06; being a co-founder of Sharing Jerusalem, a DC non profit and Way to Jerusalem, a mission group of COS several church members, and fundraiser/coordinater to facilitate twenty-nine Palestinians becoming Level One trainers in Kingian Nonviolence.
